چکیده

In the previous chapter, the components of electroless nickel plating baths were discussed from the viewpoint of the function each performs in the bath, with little attention paid to their effect on the plating process. The metal and the electron source (the reducing agent) are consumed in the electroless plating reaction and so their concentrations in the bath are continuously decreasing. There are no anodes available to maintain a near-constant metal concentration, and no external electron source (rectifier) to keep a constant flow of electrons moving into the system, as in an electrolytic plating process. In order to have a continuous and consistent electroless plating process, the reactants must be replenished. The frequency at which additions of the reactants are made to the bath depends on how far the concentrations of the reacting species can be allowed to vary from their optimum concentrations without adversely affecting the plating process, or concurrently the deposit. The electroless plating reaction not only yields a nickel alloy deposit; it also generates by-products, which accumulate in the solution. As the concentrations of the by-products increase, their influence on the plating reaction also increases. In the following sections, the effects on the plating reaction of the reactants and by-products, as variables, will be discussed.

Regeneration of Electroless Nickel Solution by Ion Exchange

As plating proceeds, both nickel and hypophosphite ions are consumed. These deficiencies can be corrected by adding nickel and hypophosphite salts. However, as the byproduct phosphite accumulates, the quality of the deposit deteriorates. At some point the bath must be discarded and replaced-a practice that is expensive due to the cost of purchasing a new solution and disposing of the old one. T...

ENVIOLET the State-of-the-Art Technology for “Electroless Nickel” Wastewater Treatment

Very often electroless electrolytes contribute to wastewater treatment problems. These electrolytes are used in electroless plating processes, which contain a variety of chemicals to meet special surface treatment requirements. Metal salts produce the base material for metal deposition and hypophosphite is delivering the electrons for the metal reduction process – it is basically the internal e...

“Experimental Investigation on the Effects of Electroless Nickel Phosphorus (Ni–P) Deposition, pH and Temperature with the Varying Coating Bath Parameters on Impact Energy by Taguchi Approach”

This paper discusses the effects of sodium hypophosphite concentration, pH and temperature on deposition rate. This paper also discusses the evaluation of coating strength, surface and subsurface by varying the bath parameters, percentage of phosphate, plating temperature and pH of the plating solution. Taguchi technique has been used for the analysis. In the experiment, Nickel chloride which i...

Structural Characterization and Mechanical Properties of As-plated and Heat Treated Electroless Ni-B-P Alloy Coatings

The Ni-B-P alloy coatings were made autocatalytically (electroless) using an alkaline plating bath with nickel chloride hexahydrate (NiCl2.6H2O) as the source of nickel ions, sodium borohydride (NaBH4) and sodium hypophosphite (NaH2PO2) as reducing agents and source of boron and phosphorous ions, respectively. The effects of bath concentrations on the plating rate, composition of coating, surfa...

The Evolution of a Process: Fifty Years of Electroless Nickel

lectroless nickel plating is a relaE. hvely new technological process. The first laboratory experiments were done in 1944 by A. Brenner and G. Riddelll during World War 11. Public announcements were made a few years later. This work bad been done without knowledge of the earlier observations by Roux in 1916* and by Wurtz3 in 1845. The early work was not successful due to poor quality reagents a...
